Actually, Apple is NOT as green as their delicious, refreshing marketing would lull you into believing. They fall behind Sony, Toshiba, Dell, Acer, HP and Panasonic in environmentally friendly practices according to the latest 2008 Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics, scoring 4.1 on a scale of 10:
http://www.greenerdesign.com/resources/resource/greenpeace-guide-greener-electronics-9.

However, they have done an excellent job of playing the Green card through their marketing, and despite the facts, are perceived as the #1 most environmentally friendly computer manufacturer, especially among the young: http://www.brighthub.com/environment/green-computing/articles/11475.aspx.

Now, I applaud any efforts to "go green" and I do think that Apple is, at the very least, doing a great thing by making people think about these things when purchasing a computer. And they raise a lot more environmental awareness than any of the other manufacturers who don't have such excellent marketing departments.

Marketing is ALWAYS kool-aid. And Apple has always exaggerated the truth for dramatic effect. You may like their products -- I do too -- but you shouldn't believe everything they tell you. They are a business, like other businesses, committed above everything else to turning a profit.

The main difference between Apple and other computer manufacturers is 1) a better usability department, and 2) a better marketing department. That's about it.
