Ecologically Responsible, Certified Green, Gold Jewelry
January 25th, 2006 by MollieI am not really all that into jewelry, but I found
greenKarat through an advertisement on my site. It makes jewelry (both their own designs and custom) without using the traditional ways of mining for gold and diamonds that are extremely damaging to the ecosystem.
“Our mission is to provide an ecologically and socially responsible jewelry alternative to those who seek change. We want to help you, in some small way, become part of the permanent solution. Together we can make a difference.” -green Karat

I’m really into jewlery, but I think I’ll pass today.
As far as passing on links, I’m retiring this from my own RSS reader and was really hoping you’d be interested in picking it up:
http://www.treehugger.com/ It’s a GREAT source for you.
Here’s an article to show you what I mean:

What these guys are doing is great, but it only touches on a small part of the issue. Any manufacturer can purchase recylced gold from Hoover and Strong. Canadian diamonds? No problem. The real issues have to do with radical transparency of all sources, and making your company green through a wide variety of protocol.
I discuss these and other industry wide issues on http://www.fairjewelry.org, the leading blog/website in support of fair and ecologically sustainable jewelry practices. There are plenty of articles and information for the consumer and for the trade on this site.
